By Sabine Pirone
July 20 (Bloomberg) -- Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s third- largest automaker, said it will invest almost $700 million to build two plants in the U.K. and Portugal to produce lithium-ion batteries for electric cars.
The U.K. factory, which will create as many as 350 jobs, will be located in Sunderland, northeast England, while several possible sites have been identified in Portugal, the Tokyo-based carmaker said in a statement today.
Nissan, 44 percent owned by French carmaker Renault SA, already has a plant in Sunderland, the U.K.’s largest auto factory, where it builds the Micra, Note and Qashqai models. Nissan plans to invest 200 million pounds ($330 million) over the next five years in the U.K. site and 250 million euros ($356 million) in Portugal, Nissan spokeswoman Gabi Whitfield said by phone today.
